But in 1981, Midnight Special was cancelled due to TV executive Dick Ebersol’s request – he was to take over Saturday Night Live and the cancellation was part of the deal.

It wasn’t long before ABC premiered their In Concert on Friday nights. And most of those who appeared on it made history. From hard rock to disco – it offered a wide array of genres. Midnight Special didn’t just showcase big rock ‘n roll acts at the time but also up and coming bands and artists. It was also where David Bowie last performed as Ziggy Stardust. Rex, Steely Dan, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Golden Earring, and Thin Lizzy. Other legendary acts who went on to appear on the show include AC/DC, Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, David Bowie, Cheap Trick, Jim Croce, Bo Diddley, Electric Light Orchestra, The Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Heart, Genesis, Journey, B.B. The pilot episode was packed with talented artists – The Everly Brothers, The Isley Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, Cass Elliot and Harry Chapin to name a few. The 90-minute program as a special was a success and NBC picked it up. Sugarman didn’t budge and instead, bought the airtime and contacted Chevrolet – which became the show’s first ever sponsor. NBC wasn’t too crazy about it mostly because all the networks signed off at 1AM and Sugarman wanted that particular time slot to capitalize on the success of The Tonight Show and therefore retain its audience. So he came up with the idea of a Friday night musical variety show where the acts would play live. The Midnight Special premiered on Augbut it wasn’t until Februwhen it became a regular series.īack then, most guests would simply lip-sync to pre-recorded music but creator Burt Sugarman wanted something different. They still had A-list celebrities as guests but more than talking, the performances were truly epic. It’s a pity, it’s really good music and I think they’re missing out.In the 1970s, late night TV shows were different. I don’t think anyone could get the kids today to sit down to listen to a song that takes up most of side two of the album. The 20 minute epic of the same name is just plain genius. Funny how the brain works and vividly recalls certain things after so many years. I couldn’t believe I could remember nearly all the lyrics after all those years. This morning I woke up with Sunrise playing in my head so grabbed my trusty iPad and with a few taps there it was.

I hadn’t heard this song in over 30 years but would catch myself humming it from time to time and make a soon forgotten mental note to download it. UH and the others came after the hippy stuff of the 60’s and they were really setting the stage for the music that followed. I think that era will go down as the golden age of rock music. Contrary to some comments UH were pretty popular in the early 70’s.
